About Us

OMJC Signal Salvage was started July 1, 1985. It was started as a sole proprietorship and incorporated in January 1991 under the new name of OMJC Signal, Inc.

Our slogan here at OMJC is "Appropriate Technology." What do we mean by this? We all know that there are places where the application of the most recent technology in traffic control makes sense, because it is the only means whereby a significant improvement can be achieved. But there are also places where it doesn't make sense. We ask people to examine their situation, and not to jump on the new technology bandwagon merely because it happens to be passing by. There are places where the status quo makes sense. There are places where an upgrade in technology makes sense, but many new alternatives are intimidating in their complexity. Not to mention the cost, or the steep learning curve! And such technologies often force you to be tied to the "apron strings" of their sales agency.

Our Reconditioned Equipment benefits you, the customer, in several ways.
First, there are economic benefits.
Our equipment provides reliable service at significantly reduced costs-typically at 50% to 60% of new. In supporting older "orphaned" traffic equipment, we can often save a customer the great expense of replacement with new equipment, or can greatly reduce costs if replacement is required.

Because we purchase and trade for used inventory, customers are often able to realize some return on items that would normally be scrapped or thrown away. The equipment we sell is guaranteed.

A second benefit is environmental. When you sell equipment to us, or buy from us, you benefit the environment in two ways. First, some of the equipment that passes through OMJC would certainly go in the landfill if it did not come to us. Once an item is discarded in this manner, any potential value is lost. It becomes just one more piece of junk that our society has buried to be rid of it.

In addition, refurbishing equipment, as we do here at OMJC, is much less energy intensive than smelting equipment back down to raw materials in order to merely re-cast those materials into similar items. When we refurbish, all our processes are carried out within the rules of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, which governs EPA related rules within Iowa. We dispose of hazardous waste through licensed agencies and recycle all unusable items that are economically feasible. We even use recycled packing peanuts in our outbound shipments.

Broad Inventory
Our broad inventory of traffic equipment means that you can get quick shipment, and even rare parts. Our in-stock inventory ranges from the 1940s and '50s vintage to today's equipment that is a mere "generation" old, such as menu driven NEMA type control equipment. We can provide everything from repair parts to complete intersections. That includes signals, cabinets, control equipment, cable and lamps. We can also provide the equipment for flashing intersections, school speed zones, and signalized school crosswalks, all at a significant savings. We also make a signal cover bag to enable our customers to comply with section 4B-19 of the MUTCD.

We also have a nice inventory of lighting poles and fixtures either on hand or available. We refurbish outdoor HID type lighting-specifically roadway, area and decorative lighting. We can re-ballast fixtures for increased efficiency per your request. We stock antique boulevard style lighting which we recondition and re-ballast.

We also manufacture a portable mast arm. It is trailer-mounted and raised by the touch of a switch. When properly installed, it will withstand 80 mile per hour winds-without any in-ground foundation. Our unit allows you to pull up to the sight of a knocked-down signal mast arm pole and have traffic signals back in the air, connected to your existing controller, in a matter of minutes. This is a nice piece of insurance.

Our Name
When Arlen Yost started the business he was told to name the business after his own name. He didn't want to because of the profound impact he had with being converted to Christianity and being confronted with the truths from the Bible. It changed him so much that he wanted to let others know. After much contemplation, he named the business with initials OMJC standing for "Our Master Jesus Christ". Additionally since he went through his Christian conversion (repenting of his sin and trusting Christ for deliverance from its penalty), he's not interested in lifting up his own name any longer. Enough said. If you have questions, email Arlen at sales@omjcsignal.com. Read 1John 5:10-12 of the Bible.

Our Work Culture
OMJC recognizes that much of their success is due to competent staff. OMJC believes in providing an environment to its work staff that encourages exercising a blend of personal initiative and personal responsibility. We try to provide a "family oriented" environment with flex time as much as possible. We seek to pay a fair and equitable wage for good employees, and treat our staff with respect.

So remember, OMJC is able to save you time, money and the pain of an upgrade. We believe in APPROPRIATE technology. If you feel comfortable with your older controllers, be they Eagle, Econolite, Multisonics, TCT, Transyt, Traconex, or otherwise, we can help you. Call.
